Social Media!

One of the components of the short film option for this project is creating a social media page for the short film. Since I mentioned booksmart and bottoms, I decided to take a look at their social media pages specifically instagram because me and my partner have chosen to do it on instagram!

Bottoms 2023 (@Bottomsmovie) social media page-

This account has many aspects that we would want to include into our instagram page. The username is simple and obviously for the movie. The account has many posts relating to the movie of course and the bio has a short summary of what the movie is about. It also tells you where you can find and watch the movie with a link right under that takes you to the movies official website. You can't see it in the photo i attached but the account has many highlights that have story posts about fans, fan art, events and critics, so we definitely will be storing our story posts in different label highlights. Then the regular instagram posts/reels take stills and clips of the movie to make jokes related to holiday or just marketing the movie in general. The regular posts also consist of alot of fan art that has been shared as of recent to keep the marketing of the movie consistent.

Booksmart 2019 (@booksmart) social media:
The username is straight forward and simple which makes it super easy for people to find due to the username just being the name of the movie. The bio includes a joke which sets the tone for the page due ot the movie being a comedy, it tells you who directed the movie and it even @'s her and it includes where you can watch the movie. I noticed that both accounts have that information of where to watch because its usually what the viewer of the account is drawn to if they haven't yet seen the movie. It also has many highlights for their stories posts that includes stories about the press tours, premieres, fan quizzes and more. The posts are similar to the bio, very heavy on the comedy and puns relating the posts to specific things like holidays and all that to market the movie more. They also showcase the different characters in these posts which helps the viewers get a scenes of who they will be watching! It makes the audience familiar with the tone, genre and substance of the film which will lead to more people beign attracted towards watching this movie!

Me and my Corina are currently working on our films font/logo so we can jumpstart our social media post with the guide of these comedy films that emulate the vibe for our short film!

Story Rough draft!

Me and my partner have been brainstorming our story for a while so heres what we have so far:

Our two main characters are a pair of best friends named: Kat and Cat. The names derive from Kathrine and Cathrine. We found these names on this baby name website! We obviously took inspiration from me and Corina having the same name but we wanted to have something to differentiate the characters so we changed the first letter. Cathrine and Kathrine have been best friends since the third grade, which is also inspired by me and Corina but we have been best friends since 6th grade. The short film follows them through their senior year and they have a theatre/drama class together. Which is also based off of me and Corina taking theatre in middle school.

Since they are in their senior year the best friends decide to make a pact to get their dream girls. Cat likes a girl who is a very mysterious character, she might be straight and that she wot have a chance. Kat likes a girl who seems to like her back but she leads her on. Kat and Cat will be a bit girl crazy when trying to get their crushes. I know this is sounding like a romance film but the main elements and scenes are based off of real experiences that we thought would work well in this as a comedy. Like background characters, jokes we say and scenarios. I definitely want this short film to have a mix of both but hopefully we can find a good balance!

Genre talk talk talk!!!

To continue my genre research I have been researching films that me and my partner have decided are the vibe, genre, and feel of a film that we want to give in our short film!

But I'm a Cheerleader (1999), directed by Jamie Babbit, is a comedy/romance movie that follows a high school cheerleader named Megan. Megan thinks she is the picture perfect American girl, she’s a cheerleader dating a football player who excels in school. She is shocked when she finds herself in an intervention made by her parents and friends because they think she is a lesbian. They then send her to "True Directions", a conversion camp where she meets a girl named Graham, and they fall in love. This movie is more of a romance but the comedy in this film is incredibly notable. Our sort film wants to have these two elements, a comedy but with that subplot of romance. Another great quality about this film is the visual aspect of it. The colors and the mise-en-scene of this movie are chosen to create a sort of typical almost satire vibe of a classic cliche romance movie while bringing up serious topics through comedy. I admire this film and want to use its use of mis-en-scene and subplot of romance to inspire our project!

Theatre Camp (2023) is a comedy/drama directed by Molly Gordon and Nick Lieberman. It is a mockumentry on one summer of a theatre summer camp in upstate New York with eccentric and passionate staff members after their beloved founder fell into a coma. This movie is so well made on the comedy aspect of it. The jokes are subtle but so smart and the delivery by the cast is amazing. The characters and their personalities make the movie and i want that in our short film. I also want our short film to give off a satire comedy vibe but also be its own thing a mix of many genres if you will!

Genre talk talk!

Ever since me and my partner decided our genre, I've been reserching the films that fall under our exact genre! Here it is!:

Booksmart (2019) is a comedy directed by Olivia Wilde about two high school senior overachievers. On the eve of their high school graduations they realize that they have missed out on all the fun parts of high school due to them being so focused on school. They decide that their last night of high school will be them reaching their goals to do everything they had missed out on. This movie is one of the funniest, well made teenage comedies out there because the jokes and humor just feel so natural. The storyline is so engaging and they excuted it perfectly from the different settings to the characters/cast, this is a great example of what vibe of this genre we want to try to achieve!

Bottoms (2023) is a comedy directed by Emma Segilman that follows two unpopular best-friends as they start a fight club in the name of self defense while in reality they just want to be closer to the two girls they have a crush on and loose their virginities. This movie is quite literally one of the best comedy movies I've ever seen because everything just works out. The soundtrack, the cast, the different characters and the storyline is just CHEFS KISS. The two main characters: Josie and PJ are our main inspiration for our short films main characters. This movie is mainly considered a comedy but the plot that gets the whole story going is based off romance ad that is what me and my partner have been talking about regarding our short film. The aesthetics of this movie are definitely an inspiration!

Project schedule!

As my partner (Corina) and I begin this project, we know we need to stay organized. Last year I
separated my schedule by individual weeks but this time my partner did some research and we decided to divide it into three parts for planning!

2/15 to 3/9:
During this time, me and my partner will be doing genre research, making our story board, script, and any sort of outlines. We will also make out shooting dates based on our availability and what we have going on outside of school. We will also be figuring out how we will go about the social media pages we must make. This time will pretty much the planning stage, which is really important so that we can make a good production. People underestimate how much planning can help a production, but it is crucial so that things can go smoothly.

3/10 to 3/30:

During this time, we will be shooting our short film, we will be taking weeks to do this since over shooting always helps when making a piece. We want it to be a comedy and have a very specific vision for this short film, so we want to make sure we do things right. We will also begin to edit during this time since that may take a while. Spring break occurs during this time, so we will try to use this time since we won't have school. I will also begin to research for my critical reflection during this time.

3/30 to 4/9:

This is where our project becomes more individual because we will be working on our own critical reflections on this blog!

Genre talk!

Immediately when me and my partner decided we wanted to work together, we knew exactly what genre we wanted to do for this short film! Me and my partner, who is also one of my closest friends are incredibly similar when it comes to what media we love. We knew we wanted to do a comedy loosely based off of us because we always talk about how we are those two main characters in those teen coming of age comedy movies. We also want to add a romance aspect to this comedy. We noticed that the movies that are under the comedy genre usually have a romantic subplot. We are still developing how we want our character dynamic and how we will give them romantic interests but here are some films that are super inspired by when it comes to this:

Booksmart (2019)
Directed by Olivia Wilde
Genre: Comedy/Drama

Bottoms (2023)
Directed by Emma Segilman
Genre: Comedy

Theater Camp (2023)
Directed by Molly Gordon & Nick Lieberman
Genre: Comedy/Drama

But I'm a Cheerleader (1999)
Directed by Jamie Babbit
Genre: Comedy/Romance

These movies fall in the same genre and will be a big part on how we decide to build our short films story, world and characters. I am so excited to do this project with inspirations from some of my favorite films!

We have been brainstorming quite a bit and we have established some key things that NEED to be in our project, I'm so excited to do this project since I loved my last one so much. I'll be updating you guys through every step of the way! <3
